Baseball-Related Shoulder Injuries You Must Know

Orthopedic injuries are known to be the most common in baseball and they could be serious. If ignored, surgery may not be avoided and it might require the use of orthopaedic implants & instruments. One of the most common locations where orthopedic injuries occur in baseball players is the shoulder. The reason behind this is that it requires the power of the shoulder to throw the ball and hit it. In this article, we will see some common shoulder injuries baseball players are prone to.

Common Shoulder and Elbow Injuries That Could Occur in Baseball Players

Instability in the Shoulder

This is one of the most common injuries seen in baseball players. Also known as “dead arm”, shoulder instability occurs due to overuse. This injury is characterized by joint instability and tiring of muscles. If we talk about the treatment of shoulder instability, then rest is said to be the first line of treatment. Now, if the condition becomes worse, surgical intervention may be required.

Strain in Flexor Mass

There is a collection of muscles and tendons in the forearm near the elbow, and that collection is known as flexor mass. It is known to help in turning and flexion of the wrist. When flexor mass is stressed or torn, it results in strain. Overuse is one of the most common reasons why this injury occurs, whereas, any awkward movement could also result in flexor mass strain. This injury is not common in general but is seen more commonly in professional pitchers.

Thrower’s Elbow

Another orthopedic injury that is seen in baseball players is the thrower’s elbow. In this injury, inflammation of flexor muscles is seen and it results in pain inside of the elbow. Again, this condition is more commonly seen in professional pitchers and the reason for this could be an improper technique or hard-throwing. Rest is indicated to relieve the pain caused in the thrower’s elbow, but severe conditions may require surgery.

Elbow UCL Sprain

Ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) provides stability to the arm when a pitcher throws the ball. Present on the inside part of the elbow, a UCL sprain occurs when the arm is overused or the elbow joint gets a direct impact. The arm is used excessively by pitchers hence, UCL strain is seen commonly in pitchers. Serious cases of this condition will require surgical treatment.

Orthopedic injuries are painful and they could occur due to multiple reasons including trauma like automobile accidents or falling from a height, bone-related diseases, or sports injuries. Baseball is one such sport in which players are prone to getting orthopedic injuries and a few common locations include shoulder and elbow. If surgery is required to treat any of the conditions, trauma implants may also be needed and they must be of high quality.
